Why Michigan Is Going To Win

Michigan State is awful at playing college football right now.

Get past all the recent history, and blow off all the emotion of the rivalry aspect. At the moment, Michigan State isn’t doing anything right with the run defense going bye-bye over the last three weeks. The Spartans allowed 200 yards or more against BYU, Northwestern and Maryland, after giving up more than 200 just once – last year’s win over Air Force – in the previous 22 games.

On the flip side, what calms everything down in a heated game like this? Getting nasty up front.

One of the biggest changes for the Wolverines this season is a far more physical, far better campaign from the O line, especially over the last month. The Michigan ground game fell off the map over the second half of the regular season last year – running for just 62 yards against the Spartans – while it’s been dominant lately with 270 yards of more in three of the last four games, including a 326-yard, six score day against Penn State.

Offensively, the Spartans just can’t put points on the board, turning it over way too often and struggling to turn drives into scores. It’s been a grind since the win over Notre Dame, scoring 21 points or fewer in four of the last five games, while the Wolverine defense is frothing at the mouth, allowing 14 or fewer in every game except for the 45-28 win over Colorado.

Why Michigan State Is Going To Win

How does Michigan State possibly get its groove back?

Okay, maybe the offensive line really can crank it up in the emotion of the rivalry game. It’s been a rough run, but the talent is there in the backfield, the running backs are good enough to come up with a few smashmouth drives, and maybe, just maybe, there can be a few wrinkles thrown in the mix like UCF came up with.

The Knights got blown out 51-14, but they ran for 275 yards and two scores, getting timely production out of the quarterback – Justin Holman at the time – and making it interesting for a little while. The Spartans can’t win this unless QB Brian Lewerke – who ran well against Maryland last week – can take some of the pressure off by taking off from time to time, and if LJ Scott can get into a groove and make third downs manageable.

Defensively, the Spartan linebacking corps might be having issues, but Riley Bullough is back, and the veteran are there up front to start to get better. No, Michigan isn’t a team to try to work out the kinks against, but Bullough and Malik McDowell up front are a good place to start. Overall, the talent is still there defensively, but it’s just not working.

Maybe this is the time it all kicks in. It’s a rivalry game at home. You don’t lose three in a row, and seven of the last eight, without having some sort of a hex over the other guy.

What’s Going To Happen?

It’ll only be a matter of time.

There won’t be a miracle punt block, and there won’t be any special twist thrown into the mix. Michigan State will actually play just well enough to make this a dogfight into the second half, but just when it seems like the upset shot will be there, Michigan will happen.

The Wolverines will dominate on two good scoring drives, the defense will clamp down, and Jabrill Peppers will exorcise the special teams demons of last year with a punt return to break it all wide open, and put him in the thick of the Heisman hunt.
