Coaches are always optimistic and think they can win every game – they just have to have that mindset – but before the season started, new Maryland head coach D.J. Durkin would’ve jumped all over the idea of being 5-2 going into the date with Indiana.

And he probably wouldn’t have believed you if you said his Terps would beat Michigan State by 11.

The Spartans are playing like horse(bleep), but give credit to the Terps for bouncing back from two awful performances to crank out one of its better games, especially considering the bumps and bruises.

Star return man and defensive back William Likely is out for the year with a knee injury, and starting quarterback Perry Hills has been banged up, but now the team is a win away from going bowling.

On the other side, Indiana is coming off its third straight loss and one of its roughest performances of the season. The O just couldn’t get going against Northwestern in a 24-14 loss, and now this becomes a must-win to keep bowl hopes alive.

In a strange twist from past seasons, the defense is coming up with nice performances, but the offense doesn’t quite have the pop it needs to – it’s just not moving the chains, and worst of all, it’s sputtering when it gets its chances scoring a pathetic 71% of the time in the red zone.

This is the game for the Indiana running game and Devine Redding against a Maryland defensive front that’s starting to get gouged.

It held up well against the weak and the sad over the first month of the season, but Penn State, Minnesota, and Michigan State all ran at will. That Maryland got out of the Spartan game alive was minor miracle – Hills was almost flawless – considering MSU averaged over six yards per carry.

Redding’s a tough, talented back who hasn’t been able to get going. He ran for 130 yards on the Terps last year, but this season he’s hit a wall against the good run defense over the last three weeks. This week he’ll break out, helping the Hoosiers to control the game from the start.
