Louisville. Keep … foot … on … gas.
Clemson isn’t going to lose twice in the ACC, meaning Louisville will have to settle for, at best, being the top one-loss team in the equation, or at least show Michigan – if the Wolverines lose – who the best of the Power 5 non-champions are.
The Cardinals did just that against NC State last week in a dominant 54-13 performance that got the team’s groove back.
November should be a breeze – and that includes Houston – even through three of the next four games are on the road. First, they’ve got to get past a Virginia team that got rushed over the last two weeks.
Just when it seemed like the Cavaliers were going to become a nuisance in the ACC race with a strong win over Duke, the defense fell off the map with a secondary that can’t come up with a stop, and a defensive front that’s not generating enough pressure.
And now the Cavs have to deal with Lamar Jackson.
Jackson was hardly awful against Duke with 144 rushing yards, but he didn’t explode with the passing attack. Last week, that was the guy who’s going to be in New York during Heisman weekend, throwing for 355 yards and three scores, and last week he ran for 76 yards and a touchdown in the blowout over NC State. Last year in a platoon against Virginia he ran once for 45 yards.
The offense might not be jaw-dropping against a jacked up Cavalier D on the road, but it’ll be good enough. It’ll be the Cardinal defense that gets the job done, especially against the run, with the Virginia offense totally unable to answer a few early Jackson touchdown drives.
