Louisville (5-1) vs. NC State (4-2) Game Preview

Date: Saturday, Oct. 22
Game Time: 12:00 pm
Venue: ABC
Network: Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium, Louisville, KY

All of a sudden, Louisville looks vulnerable. But does it matter?

The Cardinals will still be in the College Football Playoff if they finish 11-1 and get a ton of help, but they need to start looking the part again. They need to be more impressive than they were in the sluggish 24-14 win over Duke last week, and they need to get everyone buzzing – and more ACC losses from the one big boy in the Atlantic.

With three of the next four games on the road, including the game at Houston, it’s not going to be an easy run. And it’s not going to be an easy fight against an NC State team that almost gave Louisville a huge break.

The Cardinals need to win out and need Clemson to lose two ACC games, and so does NC State.

The Wolfpack almost did UofL as massive solid, and almost put itself in as the lead dog in the ACC pack, but they missed their chance in Death Valley thanks to the kicking game and a misfire late in the thrilling overtime loss.

State might have showed just how good it is and just how tough the defensive front is, but it was a killer loss in a game that was right there for the taking.

And now, because of the loss, the loser of this game is effectively out of the ACC title chase.

The Pack line might just be the perfect anecdote for Lamar Jackson and a Cardinal running game that got the job done against the Blue Devils, but never took control. The State run defense allows just 95 yards a game, doing a great job of holding up against power, quickness on the outside, and everything in between.

But what did Duke do more than anything else last week? It held on to the ball and controlled the clock, With the running of Matthew Dayes and the crisp passing of Ryan Finley, State can do that, too, keeping the ball for an average of 32 minutes per game.

The Cardinals can play a little bit of defense, though.

Lamar Jackson will be Lamar Jackson just enough to keep the Louisville offense moving, but don’t expect the fireworks and explosion of the first month of the season, or the Clemson game.

NC State will be a tough out, but on the road, it’ll falter late in yet another heartbreaker.
