Game Time: 7:00 pm

Okay, Houston. Enough of the lull.

The Cougars were deep in the hunt for the College Football Playoff discussion a few weeks ago, but Navy was able to run its way to a win, and Tulsa came within inches of possibly tying the game late last week in a 38-31 loss.

This is part of a nice Texas run for the Cougars, not leaving the Lone Star State for five straight games and just once – against Navy – in seven games. The defense has had its problems, and while the offense has scored, it’s struggled a wee bit in key situations.

Enter SMU, a try-hard team that lost to Tulsa two weeks ago in overtime and can’t seem to get the defense to work.

Wins over Liberty and North Texas are all the Mustangs have to show for a rough season, and now they need to use the rest and the preparation to deal with a Cougar squad looking to get its groove back.

Banged up, Houston really, really needs a week off to recharge – and it’s not going to get it until after dealing with UCF next week.

This week, the terrific defense should be better again after two rough performances. SMU won’t throw a lick on the Houston back seven, and getting points should be like pulling teeth at times.

It’ll take a half, but eventually the Cougars will pull away in the second half with a few fast scoring drives SMU won’t be able to answer for. The final score will look nice, but it’ll be a fight for a while.
