Connecticut (3-5) vs. East Carolina (2-5) Game Preview
Date: Saturday, Oct. 29
Game Time: pm
Venue: Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium, Greenville, NC
Two of the AAC’s biggest disappointments this year, East Carolina looked so good to start the season with a win over NC State, but the offense can’t stop giving the ball away in loss after loss in a five-game losing streak.
The O can move the ball, but it can’t close, and it can’t stop screwing up.
It’s a bit simplistic to blame all the injuries on the offensive line, and a few other key bumps and bruises, for all the problems for a team that’s lost by double-digits over the last four games, but that’s a part of it.
Part of the problem has been the unfair road schedule with four of the last five games away from Greenville, but now it’s a home game, and that needs to matter against a punchless UConn team.
The Huskies can’t score, and now the defense isn’t doing the job like it did last season. Losers of four of the last five games, they were able to whack around Cincinnati, but they bowed out of the AAC race with key losses to the big boys in the league.
There’s still time to get bowling, but this is a must win to get there. Getting QB Bryant Shirreffs okay from a wrist injury should matter, but it’s all about the Pirate offense converting.
ECU has yet to win the turnover margin this year – it’s a -12 – with a D that’s come up with just five takeaways, while the O is dead last in the nation in red zone scoring, coming up with points a pathetic 65% of the time inside the 20.
Even with the problems and concerns, the Pirates will finally stop the bleeding with the offense working just fine – and scores to come off the drives.
