Why Clemson Is Going To Win

Can the Florida State offense just turn it on again?

It’s been okay, Dalvin Cook has been solid, and the Noles came up with two wins, but they also struggled way too much against Miami and Wake Forest against two good, strong, aggressive defensive fronts.

Clemson, too, has a good, strong, defensive front, and this isn’t the D to hope to get healthy against.

The Tiger offense might get all the headlines, no matter what it does, but outside of a rough second half against Lamar Jackson and Louisville, it’s the defense that’s the main reason the team is unbeaten and deep in the College Football Playoff hunt.

Christian Wilkins and Dexter Lawrence made a few big plays against NC State, Austin Bryant should be back from a foot injury, and now it’s time for those two – and the rest of the Tiger defensive front – to get to Deondre Francois against an okay Florida State offensive line that’ll give up a few sacks here and there.

And the O can play a little, too.

The two weeks off after the close call against NC State is a big deal, helping RB Wayne Gallman get his head right after getting popped against the Wolfpack, and with a little time for the attack overall to recharge. Just when it started to look great against Louisville and BC, the Tiger attack sputtered a bit too much two weeks ago.

But Deshaun Watson was on.

He threw a pick, but he also lit up the Pack hitting 75% of his passes for 378 yards and two scores. There was plenty of dinking and dunking, but he was terrific. The only knock against him?

He’s not running as much as he did last year – he doesn’t have to – and he’s not Lamar Jackson. Other than that, he’s still Deshaun Watson. He’s still the best player in this game full of future NFL starters.

Why Florida State Is Going To Win

Yeah, the Clemson defensive front will be camped out behind the FSU line, but the FSU defensive front will be doing more than rent out space in Clemson’s backfield, too.

The front four seemed to get a jolt of energy over the last two games, being more disruptive, more aggressive, and just a little bit better at pressuring the quarterback. And now they’re rested.

Few times were in more in need of a week off than Florida State. There were plenty of bumps and bruises across the board, and while everyone has to deal with that, the Noles were struggling with depth a bit too much.

Now, with the two weeks off, Deondre Francois should be better and stronger after being beaten up a bit, while Dalvin Cook needs to be ready to come up with one of the most effective games of his career.

He did almost everything he could to take over the game last year to the Tigers, running for 194 yards and a score in the 23-13 loss, and now this needs to be his game. After a shaky start, he’s headed up with 100 yards or more in his last four games with 150 yards against Miami and 267 against South Florida.

Florida State has to run effectively, control the clock a bit, and force lots and lots of mistakes. Clemson turned the ball over four times against the Wolfpack and it almost cost them the game. Clemson gave it up at least twice four times this year, and ten times in the last three games. FSU has to force the errors, and take advantage of them all.

What’s Going To Happen?
Demand a classic.

Florida State will look and play like a different team after the two-week break, but Clemson was able to heal up, too, and it’ll show.

The Noles will get a strong day from Francois under the pressure of the Tiger defensive front, while the FSU defense will pitch a gem, allowing Watson to complete his share of passes, but without much down the field and nothing after the catch.

Clemson will win the Atlantic and win the ACC championship and the way to its second straight playoff appearance.

But Florida State isn’t going to lose three ACC games.

Clemson will win the war, but the Seminoles will win the battle this week with the home field making a difference in a war of attrition.

Both defenses will step up and shine, but Francois will come up with the drive he needs late, and the FSU D line will come up with the stop it needs to close.
