Oh come on, Central Michigan. You were supposed to beat Virginia to set up the MAC Game of the Century.

Instead, it might be an elimination game in a loaded MAC West with Toledo rocking and rolling, Ball State better, and even Eastern Michigan turning into a thing.

For the Chippewas, this is a chance to show just how far they’ve really come over the last year. Cooper Rush and the passing attack have been stellar, the defense has made night-and-day improvements – last week’s clunker to the Cavs aside – and the pieces are there to make a run to the MAC title starting with a win in what should be a wild firefight.

The problem is that Western Michigan isn’t doing anything wrong.

It won two Big Ten games on the road, got by the dangerous Georgia Southern ground game, and got to 4-0 with relative smooth sailing for a while if it can just get by this landmine.

The biggest issue is the health of the CMU receiving corps, losing Jesse Kroll for the season to a knee injury along with reserve Eric Cooper to a foot problem. Throw in concerns about Mark Chapman and his status this week, and all of a sudden it’s Corey Willis or bust for Rush to throw to.

Meanwhile, it’s all working for the WMU offense. Corey Davis is doing everything he’s supposed to for a devastating group of senior targets, and the ground attack is balancing everything out with the 1-2 punch of Jamauri Bogan and Jarvion Franklin doing everything they’re supposed to.

And then there’s QB Zach Terrell. Flawless so far, he’s thrown for 893 yards and nine touchdowns without a pick. Rush will throw for more yards this week, but that’s because he’ll have to do whatever he can to keep the offense moving.

WMU will get by and move on, but they’ll have to sweat it out until the final play.
