Why Kansas State Will Win
If Kansas State is ready to show that this really is a different year and a different team, this is the game it has to take down.
It might have a loss, but it’s to a strong Stanford team on the road. Win this over an unbeaten West Virginia team on the road, and that might be the confidence-boost needed to prove to the world that Bill Snyder really and truly might have a real, live, Big 12 title contender.
The stats are a bit misleading because of the competition, but the Wildcats lead the nation in total defense and pass defense – they did a nice job against the Cardinal, too, though.
The D is the real deal. With a veteran group and an outstanding linebacking corps, the West Virginia offense that looked so good so far should have issues getting anything consistently moving.
This should work. Kansas State can run the ball, control the clock – even if it hasn’t done it so far – and get the D off the field. The team isn’t going to make any mistakes, and it’ll pounce on every mistake and opportunity. However …
Why West Virginia Will Win
The Mountaineers have been tight. They haven’t had problems with turnovers, they don’t get flagged a whole lot, and they’ve got the right mix of offensive balance and good-enough defense with a good, versatile mix that should be able to muck it up like Kansas State likes.
But they’ve got the quarterback who can press the Wildcat defense like it hasn’t been hit so far.
Skyler Howard picked a great time to come up with one of his sharpest games, hitting 31-of-40 throws for 332 yards and a score with a pick last week against BYU, and now it’s time to make amends.
Awful in last year’s loss to Kansas State, he’s been terrific ever since with the running game to help balance things out. As good as the Wildcats have been so far, they’re just okay at bringing the pressure – partly because they haven’t had to.
Phenomenal on third downs, Howard and the Mountaineer offense could control the time off possession and the clock. Do that, and it throws off what Kansas State can do – it needs to dominate the tempo.
What’s Going To Happen?
Both teams are the real deal, but this is when Kansas State shows off just how good its defense really is.
It’ll be a well-played battle with each team having its moments when it looks like it’ll have everything going its way, but the Wildcats will go on a key fourth quarter march to finally pull ahead, and the D will take care of the rest in an impressive upset.
