Vanderbilt (1-2) vs. WKU (2-1) Game Preview

Date: Saturday, September 24th
Game Time: 4:30 pm
Venue: L.T. Smith Stadium, Bowling Green, KY

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

The Commodores came through the first time they played a Conference USA team, shocking Middle Tennessee 47-24 two weeks ago when the offense worked just fine.

They got burned by the Georgia Tech passing game when the safeties sold out against the run, and even though they got ripped up by the Blue Raiders for 399 yards and three scores, they were able to keep the bleeding to a minimum. The secondary is good enough to come up with its share of stops, and all they need to do is hold serve once in a while.

The offense needs the running game to rumble again. How did Vandy beat Middle Tennessee? 231 yards and five scores on the ground – it’s going to have to happen again.

WKU held up just fine against Alabama, allowing a mere 124 yards to the high-powered Tide attack. But the defensive line hasn’t done enough to make any noise against anyone but Miami University’s front five last week – it can be pushed a bit. However …

Why WKU Will Win

The veteran linebacking tandem of Keith Brown and T.J. McCollum should keep Ralph Webb and the Commodore runners in check.

Where’s the Vanderbilt pass rush?

It wasn’t anything special last year, but it was good enough to apply pressure on a regular basis. It’s been missing all throughout the first three games this year, and it’s been a problem. The talent is there in the defensive backfield, but it’s giving up way too many yards because quarterbacks are getting too comfortable.

WKU’s Mike White is a veteran who won’t be fazed by playing an SEC defense. The Hilltopper quarterback predictably struggled against Alabama, but he’s been just fine in his other two games thanks to his senior receiving tandem of Taywan Taylor and Nicholas Norris. With these two, WKU can hit the home run. Vandy can’t.

What’s Going To Happen?

The Hilltoppers aren’t going to need a late score to win this time around. The defense has been underappreciated, but that’ll change with a great performance from the defensive front, and a solid enough second half from White to pull out a big win for Conference USA.
