Why Utah Will Win

Cal still can’t tackle a lick.

Yeah, it managed to get by a physical Texas team, and yeah, it managed to hold up relatively well against an Arizona State team with a terrific group of backs, but for the most part, if you can get nasty, stay nasty, and keep on blasting, you can run all over this defense.

Can Utah do that for a full 60 minutes?

This isn’t the Ute team of last year with Devontae Booker thumping away, but it can still run with a little bit of pop to go along with a more effective passing game that came through when it absolutely had to against USC.

123rd in the nation against the run, Cal is giving up too many long runs that just keep on rumbling, and Utah will be more than happy grinding it out for over 35 minutes a game, like it always does.

The Ute secondary has been terrific so far, and while it hasn’t faced anything like the Bears are about to bring, it should be able to hold up just enough to win its share of battles. Utah has to be ready to get hit hard and keep up in a shootout, but it has proven it can win its share of moments and get the defense off the field.

Why California Will Win

Yeah, it’s fun to think a defense as good as Utah’s can come up with the right remedy to slow down the machine, but Texas couldn’t do it. San Diego State couldn’t do it. Arizona State couldn’t do it. The Aztecs have one of the nation’s best all-around defenses, and the Longhorns have NFL talent in their secondary – it didn’t matter.

Davis Webb is showing that he might be even better than Jared Goff, and while the NFL scouts have their concerns, the stats are startling. He’s able to keep pressing for a full 60 minutes, showing the ability to come through late, hit the long ball to stretch the field, and always produce.

The key is his completion percentage. He was under 60% with five picks in the two losses, above 60% with no picks in the two wins, but even when he wasn’t quite as accurate as the team needed, he made up for it by throwing longer later.

With star DT Lowell Lotulelei fighting through a shoulder problem, the Ute D might be quite as effective as it needs to be – it only came up with one sack against USC.

What’s Going To Happen?

Utah will run well, Cal will throw well, Cal will throw better.

As good as the Utes are – they’re the real deal – Webb at home will pick apart a strong secondary with a mix of throws to keep everything moving.

This will be a fast-paced game that Utah will get caught up in more than it might like. As much as it’ll want to try controlling the clock – and it will – Webb will make up for it by striking fast and putting the pressure on the Utes to get out of what they do well.

It’ll be a wonderful game.
