Venue: Jones AT&T Stadium, Lubbock, TX

Why Kansas Will Win

The secondary has gotten the job done. Of course, there’s a reason.

The Jayhawks haven’t allowed a slew of big pass plays giving up just 405 passing yards and four scores in the first four games.

Yeah, that’s sort of because the Jayhawks got run over by Ohio for 329 yards and gave up 205 on the ground in the blowout to Memphis, but even then, the defense was okay. The secondary has been tight so far, the run defense – while allowing plenty of yards – hasn’t actually been that miserable.

With time to prepare and gear up, there’s a shot the KU D comes up with something interesting. Sometimes, when the Texas Tech machine breaks down, it grinds to a dead stop. This defense might be just okay enough to make the Red Raiders battle a bit.

And despite the two blowout losses to Group of Five programs, there have been improvements. The passing game really has gotten better. There aren’t a lot of penalties, there’s movement on offense, there are real, live drives at times – not enough of them, though – and there are signs that things are starting to change. However …

Why Texas Tech Will Win

Just when it seems like the Jayhawks are about to start improving, they can’t get out of their own way.

Granted, the Ohio and Memphis defenses had a little bit to do with it, but the Kansas offense can’t stop turning the ball over. The defense only came up with one takeaway in the last two games, and it gave up three turnovers against the Bobcats and six against the Tigers – this team just can’t stop fumbling.

Texas Tech doesn’t need any help whatsoever with field position or scoring.

As always, the Red Raiders can’t play a lick of defense. As always, there are a whole bunch of other problems from a one-trick team – there’s little running game, the penalties pile up fast, the kicking game is suspect. But when you can throw like Pat Mahomes, it’s all good.

Along with his four rushing scores, Mahomes is at a ridiculous pace throwing for almost 1,500 yards in his first three games. These aren’t just your normal Texas Tech dinks, dunks, and chain movers, these are deep balls, big plays after the catch, and everything in between for an offense that’s hitting on all cylinders.

Kansas might be throwing the ball better, but it doesn’t have a prayer of keeping up.

What’s Going To Happen?

The Jayhawks will have their moments and they’ll put up big numbers, but Texas Tech will be Texas Tech rolling up well over 400 passing yards including a big explosion that’ll put the game away in the third quarter.

Enjoy the show.
