Texas vs. California Game Preview

Date: Saturday, September 17th
Game Time: 10:30 pm
Venue: Memorial Stadium, Berkeley, CA
Network: ESPN

Why Texas Will Win

California is really, really bad at tackling.

San Diego State’s Donnel Pumphrey went off last week against the Bears, taking off for almost ten yards per carry with 281 yards and three scores. A few weeks before off in Australia, Hawaii tore off 248 yards and three scores – averaging 6.5 yards per carry – against the Bear defense that allowed big run after big run.

The Texas running game didn’t really work against UTEP, and it only averaged four yards per carry against Notre Dame, but it’s a brutally effective attack that’ll bring the power in drive after drive. Cal might come up with a stop or two here and there, but as the game goes on it’s going to get ugly.

It’ll be a drip-drip-drip until the flood comes – and the Bear defense will be powerless to stop it.

Meanwhile, QB Shane Buechele should have yet another sharp day coming off his 22-of-27, 244-yard, four score day against UTEP. He won’t have to carry things with the ground game doing the heavy lifting, but he could if he had to.

Why California Will Win

Davis Webb is terrific.

If DeShone Kizer went from being a part of a quarterback rotation to some people’s No. 1 overall draft pick with a brilliant performance against a great Texas secondary, then Webb might be just as impressive to the draft types if he keeps up his production from the first two weeks.

Kizer only completed 15-of-24 passes against the Longhorns, but he threw for 215 yards and five scores. Webb might throw for 215 yards in the first half.

So far, the former Texas Tech bomber has chucked for 963 yards and nine touchdowns in just two games, and now he’s got a shot at Texas after not seeing time in 2013 or 2014.

He’ll put up big numbers, but he’ll also be helped from time to time with decent field position thanks to Longhorn screw-ups.

So far, Texas is among the biggest sinners in college football, getting flagged a whopping 21 times for 219 yards in the first two weeks. Cal doesn’t need any more yards.

What’s Going To Happen?

Texas is about to go all Texas on the California defense.

Being at home for the first time should help the Bears a bit, and the Texas secondary will get hit hard from time to time, but the Longhorns will grind out drive after drive – even if it’s going at a fast tempo that’s just a half-click slower than what Cal will do.

Both teams will be about pacing, but Texas will do a better job of doing what it needs to do. It’s not going to be last year’s 45-44 crazy Cal shootout win down in Austin, but it’ll be a whole bunch of fun.
