Why Ohio Will Win

Tennessee, at some point, will have to throw the ball and it’ll have to do it effectively. That hasn’t happened so far.

When the offense started to struggle a bit against Virginia Tech, the Vols turned to Joshua Dobbs’ legs along with the power of Jalen Hurd, but Ohio’s run defense has started the season well stuffing Kansas for just 26 yards and keeping Texas State’s attack – and it’s going to be good running the ball – to just 106 yards. The Bobcat problems so far have been in the secondary, but can the Vols take advantage after being just okay in the first two games?

Meanwhile, the Bobcat ground game has been terrific, running amok for 566 yards and four scores averaging over five yards per carry. Dorian Brown isn’t as good as Appalachian State’s Marcus Cox, but he can move, and QB Greg Windham is a veteran who won’t make big mistakes. If you’re thinking Ohio can pose an Appalachian State problem again, you might be right.

Why Tennessee Will Win

Okay, Tennessee. It’s time to show the world you actually have a receiving corps.

Again, the Vol running game took over at times over the first two weeks to help out an attack that needs to find some semblance of consistency, but this is the week to bust out the passing attack. The Bobcats made Texas State’s Tyler Jones look like Tyler Manziel in the opener, while Kansas was able to hit over 60% of its passes and came up with a few nice things down the field.

Tennessee has the tools. It has the talent, it has the veteran quarterback, and it has the upside to start pushing the ball down the field more. With the big boys coming up next – Florida, Georgia, Texas A&M, Alabama – if Dobbs can’t find his range now, when will he?

What’s Going To Happen?

When are we going to see Tennessee really and truly be terrific? The second half against Virginia Tech was a nice start, but Ohio won’t give the ball away five times like the Hokies did.

This won’t be another Appalachian State, but Ohio poses a lot of the same issues with a hard-nosed, smart team that’s not going to be an automatic layup. But this is the game for Dobbs to show off his arm and the skills to start doing more down the field after averaging under five yards per throw in Bristol. It’s time to get vertical, Tennessee.
