Why South Carolina Will Win

Really. What went wrong for Mississippi State, beside a doinked chip shot of a field goal? You don’t need a last-second field goal against South Alabama unless something went very, very wrong.

The Bulldog passing game went absolutely nowhere against the Jaguars, especially on third downs.

This wasn’t supposed to be a rock of a USA secondary, and Damien Williams completed 20-of-28 passes with a score – but the plays went nowhere. Williams threw for just 143 yards and the team converted just 2-of-9 third down chances.

Meanwhile, the Jaguars managed to grind out the clock, holding the ball for over 36 minutes with TE Gerald Everett killing the Bulldogs with eight catches. South Carolina can bog things down and shorten the game, too.

Vanderbilt might have won the time of possession battle, but the Gamecocks will try running the ball, relying on a tough defense, and get off the field after allowing the Commodore offense to convert just 27% of its third down tries.

Why Mississippi State Will Win

Score early, and it might be over.

Vanderbilt might have a terrific defense, but the South Carolina offense had a lot to do with the ugly overall game. This isn’t a high-powered Gamecock attack – it’ll have to manufacture points off of turnovers and it’ll have to press a bit if MSU can somehow start out hot.

The Miss State passing game might have struggled out of the gate, but the South Carolina passing game didn’t do too much, either, especially when Brandon McIlwain was in the game.

This is too good a Bulldog defensive front to let the USC running game work, and the secondary should keep this another rough day for the quarterback combination. It’s going to be a grind of a game, and at home and desperate, Mississippi State should play at a higher level. Get ready for the coaching staff to pull out all the stops.

What’s Going To Happen?

Mississippi State will bounce back – sort of. It’ll get the win with the secondary coming back from a rough day, and the offense will run just enough to keep control of the game. The biggest difference will be the special teams. Absolutely awful in the return game – not to mention Westin Graves’ two misses – the Bulldogs were miserable in the third phase. That’s not going to happen for a second week in a row.
