South Carolina (2-1) vs Kentucky (1-2) Game Preview

Date: Saturday, September 24th
Game Time: 7:30 pm
Venue: Commonwealth Stadium, Lexington, KY
Network: SEC Network

Why South Carolina Will Win

The Gamecock offense hasn’t done much of anything so far, but the defense has been up to the potential and hopeful expectations in Will Muschamp’s first three games. It gives up plenty of yards, and it’s hardly been a brick wall, but there’s not a lot of breaking going on.

There’s nothing but breaking happening against the Kentucky defense.

The UK offense has been interesting at times against mediocre defenses, but the D hasn’t even been close so far. The pass defense has been bad, the run defense worse, but at least the Cats have been consistent. If the Gamecocks were ever going to get the attack working, this would be the week.

They’ll get some help from a Cat attack that can’t stop giving the ball away with ten turnovers so far, three or more in the first three games. How did USC beat East Carolina last week when nothing was working all that hot? +4 turnover margin.

Why Kentucky Will Win

Score early and this thing is over.

Coming up with first downs has been like pulling teeth for the South Carolina offense that has little downfield pop, no running game at all, and absolutely no scoring punch. The D saved the day with the four takeaways last week, and the schedule helped the cause with Vanderbilt to start the season, but so far the offense has mustered just 47 points. Florida shut down the Wildcats cold, but the passing game worked just find against Southern Miss and New Mexico State.

And then there’s the desperation factor. This is it for Kentucky. Lose this, and that’s the season. With a trip to Alabama coming up next, a loss to South Carolina means a 1-4 start and way, way too much work to do to get bowling. Win, and with Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, and Austin Peay still to play, the Cats might be able to get close.

QB Stephen Johnson stepped in last week against New Mexico State and is lights out, completing 17-of-22 passes for 310 yards and three scores in the win. Now the Wildcats have options to play with if the O stalls.

What’s Going To Happen?

Do you like the team with no offense or the one without a defense? Kentucky’s defense has shown absolutely nothing yet to show it can stop anyone with a pulse, and South Carolina’s offense hasn’t shown anything to suggest it might be able to keep up in a firefight.

The Gamecocks will come up with the few plays to change the game in the second half that UK won’t. The team that wins the turnover battle wins the game.
