Why Cincinnati Will Win

Purdue’s offense got the job done against Eastern Kentucky, but it overcame a rocky day from the defense with turnovers. A +3 in turnover margin, the Boilermakers were able to overcome several problems, especially on third downs. They kept on bending giving up yards in chunks, but they didn’t break enough. That’s not going to happen against the Cincinnati offense – at least in theory.

Fine – the Bearcat offense didn’t work. It’s got the weapons, and it’s got the line to beat up the Boilermaker defensive front, but it didn’t happen against UT Martin. Call that a case of the Week One tune-ups – the UC offense is way too talented to average just 400 yards per game and struggle as badly as it did throughout last week. If the Bearcats let the passing game rip, Purdue doesn’t have the secondary to do much about it. Or …

Why Purdue Will Win

It’s quite possible the Cincinnati attack just isn’t as good as originally thought. Hayden Moore threw for 260 yards and two scores last week after beating out Gunner Kiel for the gig, but the offense too often sputtered and coughed. Awful on third downs, and without much of a running game turning into short-range chances to move the chains, it took too much to put the Skyhawks away.

Meanwhile, the Purdue offense was excellent last week doing exactly what it was supposed to do. Eastern Kentucky is hardly a proper test, but considering all the problems the Boilermakers have had in the Darrell Hazell era, they looked like they found something. There was an almost perfect offensive balance, and even though David Blough had a few too many misfires, he kept the attack moving.

What’s Going To Happen?

Purdue desperately needs this game. If this is really going to be a new team and a new era under Hazell, it has to prove it’s stronger than a mid-level Group of 5 team. Cincinnati has more firepower than it showed against UT Martin, and it’s all going to be unleashed in West Lafayette. But the Purdue offense will work, too.
