Penn State vs. Temple Game Preview
Date: Saturday, September 17th
Game Time: 12:00 pm
Venue: Beaver Stadium, University Park, PA
Why Temple Will Win
Don’t be fooled by the stats – the Temple run defense is fine. Playing Army is going to skew things, and stuffing Stony Brook wasn’t a problem. Now the Owls should be able to show off up front and get tough against a Penn State offensive line that’s still trying to work out the issues.
The Nittany Lions might have run for four scores against Pitt, but the ground game didn’t go anywhere averaging just 2.4 yards per carry and needing to get throwing after the defense started to falter. Again, blow off the stats because of the competition and styles – Temple doesn’t have the No. 1 pass defense in college football talent-wise – but this is a good D with a strong enough secondary to hold up.
What’s Temple going to be best at defensively? Getting off the field. Penn State’s offense is better, but it’s not hitting its third down plays converting just 29% of its chances.
Why Penn State Will Win
It’s not like Penn State is going to try harder now than it would’ve before, but after breaking a long, long winning streak over Temple in last year’s loss, and with the way the Pitt game went down, this becomes a moment for the program. James Franklin can survive a loss, but it’s going to be a tough season packed with pressure if he loses to Temple again.
Getting the win will start with a run defense that should tee off in the backfield. After an embarrassing performance against Pitt, expect the defensive front – banged up and all – to tee off on the Owl running game with Temple’s passing attack struggling way too much.
If you’re only completing 45% of your passes for 292 yards with four picks against both Army and Stony Brook, you’re not going to suddenly get hot against Penn State.
What’s Going To Happen?
Horrific public relations ceremonies aside, Penn State should come back roaring after a rough week against Pitt. The Temple offense won’t get anything moving on the ground, and Trace McSorley will pick up where he left off – in a good way, and not the late mistake – trying to bring the team back against Pitt.
It still won’t be the prettiest of performances for the Nittany Lions, but they’ll manage to get by and allow everyone to exhale for a bit going into the Michigan showdown.
