Why Virginia Will Win

Virginia is a whole lot better than it showed in the loss to Richmond.

The running game was a disaster, the defense got bombed on, and nothing seemed to work on either side of the ball – it looked like a rebuilding team playing in Week One under a new coaching staff.

There were a few positives. QB Kurt Benkert brought the team back late – to some extent – with a decent fourth quarter. The O line didn’t generate any sort of a push and the backs weren’t able to find any room, but Benkert got in enough work to be ready to bomb away. Quarterback was a question mark coming into the season, but he was fine, and this week he should have some success against an Oregon D coming off a rocky outing allowing over 300 yards to UC Davis.

The linebacking corps and secondary are going to have better days. Micah Kiser came up with 14 tackles and Zach Bradshaw came up with nine stops and two tackles for loss. Can the linebackers keep Oregon from running wild? The Ducks didn’t quite have the offensive tempo ramped up to warp speed in Week One as QB Dakota Prukop is still getting a hang of the gig, but …

Why Oregon Will Win

Prukop was solid in the opener. Yeah, the offense isn’t quite humming at a Marcus Mariota level, but Prukop connected 21-of-30 passes for 271 yards and three scores to go along with a rushing score. It was a better debut than he gave himself credit for.

The Ducks might just be getting warmed up, but the running game was more than fine with Tony Brooks-James averaging over 11 yards per pop and Royce Freeman doing a nice job when he got free. Virginia really might have a better defensive front than it showed in the opener, but it’s got to prove while reading and reacting far, far faster.

Offensively, can Virginia stop screwing up? It turned it over four times – losing three fumbles – converted 2-of-10 third down chances, and only had the ball for 20 minutes. Any mistake and turnover will be turned into instant Duck points.

What’s Going To Happen?

This isn’t the team you want to face when you’re coming off a clunker. Virginia will be okay, but it has to deal with an Oregon team that’s hardly satisfied and hardly going to take it easy. When you have a mediocre day and score 53 points like the Ducks did against UC Davis, you’re pretty good.
