Why Oklahoma Will Win

Is the TCU D ready for a real team again?

The concerns were supposed to be about the offense that had to replace several key parts, but the defense was supposed to be a rock. It was against SMU and Iowa State, but that’s SMU and Iowa State.

The secondary has struggled, the linebacking corps just okay, and this now becomes a prove-it moment to for the real Horned Frog defense to please stand up.

It also helps that OU has had two weeks to prepare for it.

It’s desperation time for the 1-2 Sooners after failing miserably in their two big tests to start the season. Lose this, and then the pressure gets ramped up to a whole other level going into the Texas showdown.

This looked like a team in need of a rest after being outclassed and banged up by Ohio State, and the time off should do wonders.

There are way too many good parts offensively to struggle and sputter this much. The numbers are there, and the team is moving the ball, but this game is about the running game, Baker Mayfield hitting his midrange throws, and taking advantage of the TCU D that’s not coming up with the key stops like most Gary Patterson teams do.

It’s attitude time for OU. This should be a different team after the break. However …

Why TCU Will Win

This might be what Oklahoma is.

It’s just not physical enough on the lines, and its speed and athleticism weren’t enough to match up with the warp wheels at Ohio State or the scheme of Houston.

TCU can run a bit, but it hasn’t had to get too nasty and too tough considering Kenny Hill and the passing attack have been unstoppable at times – first quarter against SMU aside.

Hill’s been the perfect fit with two 400-yard games, a 377-yarder against Arkansas, and a throat slash that didn’t cost the Horned Frogs the game against the Hogs, but didn’t help. He’s got the attitude and the brashness that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

TCU has shown more firepower and more pop so far, and it should be able to take a few chances and shots considering OU isn’t forcing mistakes. Hill can take a few chances against a secondary that has yet to pick off a pass in its first three games and got picked clean by Greg Ward and J.T. Barrett.

Hill might be ready to show he’s every bit as good as those two.

What’s Going To Happen?

Really?! Can Oklahoma start the season 1-3? Yup.

The rest will help, and the running game might be just good enough to dominate at times, but this isn’t a Sooner offense built to own the time of possession and keep Hill off the field.

Hill will be maddening on third downs for the OU D, and the offense will simply be better and more effective. It’ll be a fun and wild, back-and-forth shootout, and then comes the discussion next week about Oklahoma being the season’s biggest disappointment so far – even if its three losses are against three elite teams.
