Rutgers (1-1) vs. New Mexico (1-1) Game Preview

Date: Saturday, September 17th
Game Time: 12:00 pm
Venue: High Points Solutions Stadium, Piscataway, NJ

Rutgers came up with the first win of the Chris Ash era with a blasting of Howard last week, but there are still plenty of question marks with Iowa, Ohio State and Michigan up next.

Can the Scarlet Knights throw the ball? They haven’t been able to do it quite yet even with a veteran quarterback in Chris Laviano and a good-looking receiving corps that should be a whole lot better.

Even after the 52-14 win over the Bison, the offense needs to be more efficient, steadier and it has to get a lot better in a big hurry with a defense that’s not going to be good enough to hold its end of the bargain against the big boys.

But Rutgers has been able to stop the run.

It might have been a rivalry game, but there’s still no excuse for New Mexico to lose to a team as bad as New Mexico State. The Lobos came up with an inexplicable 32-31 clunker with the ground game held to 221 yards and with two turnovers turning into a really big deal.

New Mexico is better than that, but it’ll have it tough without RB Teryion Gipson and LB Dakota Cox – both are expected to miss the game with concussions. That means QB Austin Apodaca has to add more of a passing element to the mix, but it’ll be the deep Rutgers backfield that takes over. Both teams will run the ball effectively, but Laviano will be just a wee bit better at keeping drives alive. He’ll need to be to keep his gig.
