The Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy – given to the winner among the military academies – isn’t a given this year with Army more than just a speedbump, but Navy and Air Force are better.
The two teams are still unbeaten and still have big possibilities even though they’re not getting much respect in their respective conferences.
It’s all about Boise State and San Diego State in the Mountain West, but Air Force has the ground game rolling as always and the defense that was so good last year is even better so far against the run.
It’s Houston’s American Athletic Conference, but the Midshipmen are still rolling in the post-Keenan Reynolds era – they get the Cougars next week.
This isn’t last year’s Navy team, but the linebackers held up reasonably well against Tulane’s new ground game in the 21-14 win a few weeks ago. Can it handle the Air Force precision? It’s had two weeks to prepare for it and it should be just good enough to string it out and make Nate Romine go to the air a bit more than he might like. He’s been fine throwing it, but the Falcons have to establish Jacobi Owens and D.J. Johnson right away – they’ve got to be the ones controlling the clock.
So far the Air Force offensive line has done a better over all job than Navy’s, but backup QB Will Worth has been able to do just enough to get by. He ran for 113 yards against the Green Wave, but this is where he’ll have problems.
Can Navy establish Chris High and the power game early up the gut? It’ll have to, but Air Force is too strong in the interior and too experienced on the outside.
The Air Force defense will make the plays in the backfield that Navy’s won’t.
