Venue: TCF Bank Stadium, Minneapolis, MN

Why Oregon State Will Win

So what’s better about your 2016 Oregon State Beavers? They’re going to be stronger and better offensively, and they’ve got a nice secondary that should be able to put the clamps down on a mediocre Minnesota receiving corps.

The Gophers might have the rising-star quarterback in Mitch Leidner, but he doesn’t have anyone dangerous to throw to. The bigger issue for Minnesota could be a better OSU offensive front with the experience to start getting more physical and could give the Gopher linebackers fits.

The Oregon State spread attack has Utah State transfer QB Darrell Garretson at the helm now, and he’s just good enough to keep the chains moving, control the clock, and keep the Beaver D off the field.

Why Minnesota Will Win

The Oregon State defense is going to be better with a little bit of time, but it’s not there yet. The front seven had to undergo a bit of an overhaul this offseason after losing several key parts, and the depth just isn’t there.

Can Minnesota go all Big Ten and simply blast its way to the win? The Gopher line will be far, far more bruising now for the excellent tandem of sophomore running backs Shannon Brooks and Rodney Smith.

The Oregon State front seven will be aggressive, and Gary Andersen almost always knows how to get the most out of whatever he’s working with, but the Gophers should be able to control the game. As improved as the Beaver spread attack should be, it’s not going to be explosive. It’s not going to score in chunks.

What’s Going To Happen?

Minnesota will have to work for it. It’s a new era now that it really is Tracy Claeys’ full-time job, the team’s going to take on an even more physical style and should get back to the offense that worked so well two years ago.

Oregon State’s spread attack will be a problem, though – it’s going to work. It’ll be worth staying with late on a Thursday night – at least if you’re in the Eastern Time Zone – with the Gophers getting by after taking control in the fourth quarter.
