Maryland (3-0) vs. Purdue (2-1) Game Preview
Date: Saturday, Oct. 1
Game Time: 3:30 pm
Venue: Maryland Stadium, College Park, MD
Call it a bowl elimination game between the two teams with a whole lot of big tough games against. However, for Maryland, there’s a chance this is a springboard to being the surprise team of the first half of the season.
It doesn’t bode well when it takes two overtimes to get by UCF, but the Terps are still 3-0 with a relatively easy Big Ten home game to start a stretch of three home games in the next four weeks. Penn State and Minnesota are beatable, and Indiana and Rutgers are down the road. Win this, and the Terps are 4-0 and a mortal lock to go bowling.
The offense has found something with a tough ground game that’s overcoming a limited and conservative passing game. The Terps have cranked out 800 yards so far on the ground averaging 5.8 yards per carry, relying on their defense to come through so far against overmatched opponents.
Still turnover-less on the year, head coach D.J. Durkin preached ball security from Day One, and hasn’t stopped – the results are there. The Terps aren’t beating themselves.
Purdue bounced back from a loss to Cincinnati – and a miserable start against Nevada – to get a desperately-needed win against the Wolf Pack with QB David Blough once again showing off just how different this year’s team really is.
He threw for 401 yards against Cincinnati, and hit 21-of-30 passes for 300 yards and two scores against Nevada – the season is on his shoulders.
However, Blough has given up seven picks, the defense isn’t picking up the slack with big takeaways, and the D isn’t coming up with stops on third downs.
Purdue doesn’t get penalized, and it’s showing more upside, but it’ll make more mistakes on the road as Maryland rolls in its Big Ten home opener.
