MAC Week 2 Rankings, Predictions & Quick Takes

How are the MAC predictions so far? SU: 14-7, ATS: 3-9

1.Western Michigan (2-0)

Final Score: Western Michigan 70, NC Central 21
Prediction: Western Michigan 45, NC Central 13
Up Next: at Illinois
Quick Take: It was muscle flexing time. The Broncos came back from the win over Northwestern to dominate from the start. Zach Terrell was flawless throwing four touchdown passes, the ground game worked no matter who ran the ball with Jamauri Bogan and LeVante Bellamy each going over 100 yards, and Jarvion Franklin coming up with 91, and the defense coming off a bad first half to own the second. MWU cranked up 614 yards of total offense.

2. Toledo (2-0)

Final Score: Toledo 45, Maine 3
Prediction: Toledo 41, Maine 16
Up Next: Fresno State
Quick Take: The Rockets might have needed to try in the third quarter, but Logan Woodside and the passing game rolled at will to come up with the easy win. He threw for 329 yards and four scores while the ground game controlled everything else averaging 5.7 yards per carry. The big key? The pass D didn’t let Maine move the ball, allowing just 65 yards through the air.

3. Central Michigan

Final Score: Central Michigan 30, Oklahoma State 27
Prediction: Oklahoma State 44, Central Michigan 20, Oklahoma State -20.5
Up Next: UNLV
Quick Take: Who cares that CMU should never have had a chance to come up with the miracle? The school went on the road to deal with a very, very good Big 12 team and walked out with a win thanks to a huge day from the defense against the Oklahoma State ground game, and with Cooper Rush showing off why he’s a pro prospect. CMU made the plays – or the play – and Oklahoma State didn’t.

4. Northern Illinois (0-2)

Final Score: South Florida 48, Northern Illinois 17
Prediction: South Florida 26, Northern Illinois 20, USF -15
Up Next: San Diego State
Quick Take: Uh oh. Coming off the tough loss at Wyoming, the last thing Northern Illinois needed was a bad day from the defense in the heat of Tampa. That’s exactly what happened as the D couldn’t slow down anything the Bulls wanted to do, and the running game couldn’t control anything. This isn’t a high-powered USF attack, and NIU gave up 658 yards.

5. Ohio (1-1)

Final Score: Ohio 37, Kansas 21
Prediction: Kansas 34, Ohio 31, Kansas -2.5
Up Next: at Tennessee
Quick Take: Now that’s the Ohio everyone was expecting. After an awful defensive performance in the loss to Texas State, the Bobcats roared on the ground with 329 yards and two scores, and they stuffed everything Kansas tried to do allowing just 26 rushing yards and no third down conversions.

6. Ball State (1-1)

Final Score: Indiana 30, Ball State 20
Prediction: Indiana 38, Ball State 17, Indiana -17.5
Up Next: Eastern Kentucky
Quick Take: Three turnovers. Ball State has an improved offense under head coach Mike Neu, but it can’t afford to make key mistakes like it did against the Hoosiers and still plan to stay alive. The O woke up in the fourth quarter and made it fun – there wasn’t any fight – but there was too big a hole to climb out of.

7. Bowling Green (1-1)

Final Score: Bowling Green 27, North Dakota 26
Prediction: Bowling Green 45, North Dakota 16
Up Next: Middle Tennessee
Quick Take: Phew. It took a missed two-point conversion for the Falcons to survive an embarrassing loss that would’ve made it a really, really tough start to the Mike Jinks era. No running game, three turnovers, and struggles controlling the clock were a problem for a Falcon team that should’ve been cruising after a big early lead.

8. Akron (1-1)

Final Score: Wisconsin 54, Akron 10
Prediction: Wisconsin 41, Akron 13, Wisconsin -25
Up Next: at Marshall
Quick Take: Wisconsin stopped LSU’s offense – Akron didn’t have a chance. Thomas Woodson and the passing game that were so great against VMI couldn’t get anything consistently going, while the O as a whole didn’t take advantage of their chances. The D of last year isn’t back and still needs time to be as physical as it was throughout 2015, but Wisconsin will make most teams look bad.

9. Eastern Michigan (1-1)

Final Score: Missouri 61, Eastern Michigan 21
Prediction: Missouri 38, Eastern Michigan 10, Missouri -25.5
Up Next: at Charlotte
Quick Take: The Eagles suffered from playing a team desperate to bomb away on offense and get the attack going. EMU ran into a buzzsaw, but the running game was okay against an elite defense, and Todd Porter threw for 287 yards and a score. The held on to the ball for close to 39 minutes, but they didn’t come up with a meaningful defensive stop.

10. Buffalo (0-1)

Up Next: Nevada

11. Miami University (0-2)

Final Score: Eastern Illinois 21, Miami Univ. 17
Prediction: Miami Univ. 38, Eastern Illinois 34
Up Next: Western Kentucky
Quick Take: Ugh. Miami seemingly had this in hand, and all it had to do was close out with a decent, sustained drive in the final minutes. It couldn’t do it giving up two touchdowns in the final four minutes including the final score with under a minute to play. 12 penalties and the defensive problems at the end killed a solid night from the offense. This would’ve been a big win against a solid EIU team.

12. Kent State (0-2)

Final Score: North Carolina A&T 39, Kent State 36, 4 OT
Prediction: Kent State 38, North Carolina A&T 6
Up Next: Monmouth
Quick Take: Kent State is built to come up with a late stop and come through in overtime, but it failed in the final minutes in regulations, and it couldn’t come through with overtime stops allowing three touchdowns.
