LSU vs. Auburn Game Preview

Venue: Jordan-Hare Stadium, Auburn, AL
Why LSU Will Win
The defense is working.
The offense might have a problem, but the defense has been up to the level expected dropping the Mississippi State running game for 56 yards on 32 carries and allowing under three yards per carry on the year.
How do you get through a cold streak, especially one to start the season with a quarterback mess? You run your next-level superstar running back over and over and over again, sort of like Texas A&M did last week rolling 37 times for 231 yards averaging more than six yards per pop.
Fournette rumbled for 228 yards and three touchdowns against the Tigers last year, and he’s done everything possible to carry the team on his back this season with 285 yards averaging 5.6 yards per pop against Wisconsin and Mississippi State. It’ll be his job to be the offense and let the D do the work against the mediocre Auburn attack.
The LSU defense has allowed teams to convert just 24% of their third down chances, so if it can get off the field in a hurry against the mediocre Auburn offense, and if Fournette can grind out drives, the Bayou Tigers should be able to get out alive.
Why Auburn Will Win
It’s getting a bad rap because it’s not as devastating as everyone’s hoping it’ll be, but the Auburn running game hasn’t been all that bad.
The 462 yards against Arkansas State have skewed the stats a little bit, but the ground game was fine against Texas A&M, too, keeping the team in the game with 236 yards and two scores. It wasn’t special, and it wasn’t enough, and the passing attack went absolutely nowhere, but it should be okay to keep the game alive thanks to an LSU offense that’s not doing a thing when Fournette isn’t effective.
Or when he’s fumbling.
It’s not really fair to put the Tiger problems on Fournette, considering what he has to do, but he had a hard time hanging on to the ball in the second half. If Auburn can keep the field tilted and can force LSU to try going on long, sustained drives, it should be able to capitalize – the AU Tigers need a short field of their own.
This isn’t an efficient passing LSU team and it’s not going to hit any home runs. It’s a dink-and-dunk attack that can’t lose the turnover battle and has to handle the pressure of dealing with a desperate team playing its fourth straight home game.
What’s Going To Happen?
Danny Etling might really be the answer.
The LSU defense is getting the job done, and Fournette is Fournette. Etling did his part against Mississippi State hitting 63% of his throws and a score – with no picks.
Coming off a six sack game, the LSU defense and rising superstar Arden Key will control the game in the second half as the road Tigers come up with an important, but unimpressive win.
