Louisville (3-0) vs. Marshall (1-1) Game Preview
Date: Saturday, September 24th
Game Time: 8:00 pm
Venue: Joan C. Edwards Stadium, Huntington, WV
Network: CBS Sports Network
Why Louisville Will Win
Marshall just gave up 524 yards of total offense and 65 points to Akron.
The Thundering Herd secondary wasn’t even close to slowing down Zip QB Thomas Woodson, who bombed away for 379 yards and four touchdowns, moving the chains at will even though Marshall was able to provide a little bit of pressure.
It was an awful day all-around for the Herd defense, the offense turned it over four times, and the game got out of hand as Akron capitalized on just about every chance it was given.
Louisville only scored 63 points against Florida State.
Lamar Jackson might be everyone’s Heisman guy right now, but the Cardinals are more than just their superstar quarterback. Why is he able to run free with no one around him? He’s just that good, but he’s also getting wide open spaces to run through. The O line has been devastating so far, helping running backs Brandon Radcliff and Jeremy Smith each average over ten yards per pop.
The defense has been outstanding, too, – the Seminoles didn’t start getting into the end zone after the game was well out of reach – thanks to a dominant pass rush that’s been relentless from all sides.
Why Marshall Will Win
Is there any way possible Louisville might be 1) getting a big, giant head after destroying Florida State and/or 2) kinda sorta thinking ahead to that little showdown at Clemson next week with a chance to all but take the ACC title?
It’s been lost in the shuffle now, but Syracuse was still around – okay, so it was still within if-everything-goes-miraculously-right range – in the second half against the Cardinals and was able to wing it around a little bit.
Marshall has to try to slow this thing down as much as humanly possible. Louisville is fast, fast, fast, but the Herd can throw, too, with the ability and talent to keep up if this gets into a shootout. They’ll need to find a way to use as much clock and take Jackson out of his rhythm as much as humanly possible.
How does that happen, considering MU likes to hustle up, too?
It starts by trying to pound away a bit with Keion Davis and grind out first downs, get the ball out of Chase Litton’s hands in a hurry and accept that a four-yard pass play is just fine, and just keep converting on third downs.
No problem at all.
What’s Going To Happen?
Marshall will do a nice job of staying in it for about 20 minutes. The Herd will be trending, there will be a buzz, and then Lamar Jackson will happen.
The Cardinals will go on a scoring burst to take over the game, and while Marshall will keep on throwing and will put points on the board, the UofL fun will continue.
