In a weird sort of way, this could be a dangerous game for a Cougar team that needs to keep its foot on the gas.

Don’t be fooled by the 40-16 final score against Cincinnati – the Cougars were in trouble in the fourth quarter. They exploded on defense when the offense started bogging down a bit. It was a battle, but they came through with what they needed to do to kick off American Athletic Conference play.

They did what a team pushing for the College Football Playoff is supposed to do.

While everyone is focusing on Greg Ward Jr. and the fun offense, but it’s LB Steven Taylor and the defense that’s taking center stage with the nation’s leading run D. Houston’s been outstanding at controlling the clock so far, keeping the ball for almost 38 minutes a game – and that’s a problem for Texas State.

The Bobcats aren’t great in time of possession so far – paying Arkansas will do that – and the running game hasn’t gone anywhere. Can Tyler Jones keep up and put the pressure on?

TXST won’t gain 100 yards on the ground, but it might be able to throw a bit. Jones was unstoppable against Ohio, very stoppable against Arkansas, and now it’s on him to be special.

It’s on the Houston defense to keep that from happening.

The crowd will be crazy, the Bobcats will come up with a few good early drives, and then Ward will settle everything down and everything will return to norm.

Houston will keep on being Houston.
