Why Georgia Will Win
Georgia found its quarterback now.
It’s sink-or-swim time with the superstar true freshman, and while Jacob Eason might not be as accurate as he needs to be, and even though it took him 55 passes to get to 308 yards against Missouri, he threw three touchdown passes on the road and came up huge in the final moments to pull out the win. He’s figuring it out fast, and the team has been able to get to 3-0 even with all the issues trying to get its main man’s feet wet.
On the other side, sort of like Missouri, Ole Miss is a good fit for a Georgia defense with a strong secondary and no worries about the Rebel running game.
The Ole Miss running backs didn’t get going against Florida State or Alabama, for obvious reasons, and on the year it’s averaging just 3.8 yards per carry and can’t get much of anything going.
The Georgia secondary might be the team’s strength, even after getting bombed on by Mizzou. It might have allowed 376 yards and three scores, but it picked off three passes and five in the last two games.
Why Ole Miss Will Win
Where’s the Georgia pass rush? It did next to nothing in the Tiger backfield last week and has just three sacks on the year – two coming against Nicholls State.
Yeah, the Bulldog defensive backs are terrific, but if Drew Lock can bomb away against it, then watch out for Chad Kelly, who’s coming off a 421-yard day against Alabama as he made play after play under intense pressure all game long. This week, he’ll have time to operate.
Georgia should dominate in time of possession, but it’ll have to do it with Eason. The Bulldog ground game wasn’t great against Nicholls State and it hit a brick wall against Missouri.
The Ole Miss defensive front is far better than it showed against Alabama, but that’s Alabama. The Bulldog offensive line came up with a great opener against North Carolina, but it’s struggled to generate enough of a consistent push over the last two weeks.
Eason might be special, but this is the third freshman quarterback Ole Miss has faced this year, and this one doesn’t move. If the pass rush was ever going to tee off, this would be the time.
What’s Going To Happen?
Ole Miss isn’t going 1-3.
Georgia has been fantastic at finding ways to get the job done. It’s winning the turnover battle, it’s coming through clutch in the fourth quarter, and in this game, it’s going to hold on to the ball for at least 35 minutes and it’ll almost always seem like it has the ball.
Eason is the most talented quarterback in the game, but he’s not there quite yet. Kelly will come through, running the up-tempo offense perfectly and making the freshman and the offense press too much. Nick Chubb won’t get his groove back and it’ll be all on Eason, who’ll be great, but not quite good enough in the clutch this time around.
