Georgia vs. North Carolina Game Preview & Fearless Prediction

Greyson Lambert named the starter vs. North Carolina

Georgia went with the veteran option for the opening game against North Carolina in the Georgia Dome, choosing Lambert as the starter. Last year, he led the team completing 63% of his passes for 1,959 yards and 12 touchdowns with just two interceptions, but the offense started to stall as the season went on.

He was one of the hottest quarterbacks in the country early on, completing 24-of-25 passes for 330 yards and three scores against South Carolina, and followed it up by completing 9-of-10 throws for 146 yards and two scores against Southern, but after going against Alabama, Tennessee and Missouri – and doing okay – he was replaced before getting back into the mix over the second half of the season.

He completing 10-of-20 passes for 115 yards and a score against Penn State in the TaxSlayer Bowl win.

Will Jacob Eason play?

It seems like it’s just a question of time before superstar recruit Jacob Eason gets into the mix, and he’s right there in case Lambert struggles at all. Brice Ramsey was given his shot in fall camp, but the starting gig came down to Lambert and Eason over the last few days.

It’s not a done deal.

Head coach Kirby Smart didn’t fully commit to Lambert for the entire season, sink-or-swim. If the 6-5, 220-pound veteran isn’t getting the job done or if the offense starts to stall, there won’t be much of a hesitation to make a change. It’s not like Lambert blew out Eason – it’s No. 1 and No. 1A for the Dawgs.

Nick Chubb is back.

The quarterback situation was a question mark, but the big key to the Dawgs early on is the return of star RB Nick Chubb from the knee injury that cost him most of last season. He’s been cleared to go full speed, he’s not going to be limited, and he’s likely going to carry the offense early on. That’s why …

What Does This All REALLY Mean?

Lambert is the safe choice. No one’s doubting that Eason is the more talented quarterback and the eventual option to take Georgia to a whole other level, but the formula is simple now. Rely on the smart, veteran quarterback to not make mistakes, hand the ball off to Chubb, and let the defense take care of the rest against the Tar Heels.

If you want to get the hotshot freshman some work, that’s what Nicholls State is for next week.
