Florida State (3-1) vs. North Carolina (3-1) Game Preview

Date: Saturday, Oct. 1
Game Time: 3:30 pm
Venue: Doak Campbell Stadium, Tallahassee, FL
Network: ESPN

Why North Carolina Will Win

The offense is explosive enough to keep up the pace – any pace.

The running game isn’t working, and the line isn’t going to generate any sort of a push, but Mitch Trubisky and the passing attack have been brilliant for an explosive offense that found its groove over the last few weeks.

Of course, it helps to face Illinois, James Madison, and the suddenly-awful Pitt D, but it’s all working right now.

Florida State is way, way too shaky defensively right now, and it’s not just because Lamar Jackson went wild a few weeks ago.

The D was saved by takeaways against Ole Miss, but it was sluggish out of the gate against South Florida and has been stunningly mediocre in all phases. UNC will try running the ball, but when it starts winging it around, FSU will give up way too many big plays.

Chad Kelly is the best quarterback the Noles have faced, but Trubisky will look the part.

Why Florida State Will Win

Dalvin Cook has arrived.

Ole Miss kept the FSU rushing star under wraps, and the Louisville game got out of hand before he could be established. But against South Florida, the offense basically said enough is enough.

Cook tore off 267 yards and two scores with massive dashes after massive dashes. North Carolina has a defense that gives up massive dashes.

Georgia hasn’t been able to run the ball on anyone, but Nick Chubb and company took over against the soft Tar Heel defensive front. Illinois can’t run, and it averaged five yards per pop with 182 yards. James Madison ran for over 200 yards with three scores, and Pitt ran wild in last week’s shootout.

Cook will walk off the bus with 100 yards booked.

While he’ll come up with his share of long dashes, the running game will dominate the clock for a Seminole offense that holds the ball for over 36 minutes a game. On the other side, UNC keeps the ball for just under 23 minutes per outing.

What’s Going To Happen?

Florida State can throw a little, too.

The Seminole defense is better than it’s looked at times, and the secondary will come up with just enough stops to get out alive. North Carolina will bomb away and stay in the game, and then Cook will come up with gash after gash to take the game back.
