Coaches Hot Seat Rankings: Week 2

It’s only Week 2, but which coaches are on the biggest hot seat? Who’s in trouble and who needs a win NOW.

As always, the idea of a coach being on a hot seat doesn’t mean it’s a Win Or Be Fired situation. In several cases he could be under intense pressure to get his team to be better. Or, it just means the dude needs to win or he’ll soon be canned.

Week 2 Coaches Hot Seat Top 5 Ranking

1. Mark Stoops, Kentucky

Losing to Southern Miss is one thing. Losing to Florida is another thing. Losing to Florida when the quarterbacks threw as many passes to Gators as they did to Wildcats is a whole other issue. Kentucky needed to go bowling this season. Kentucky isn’t going bowling this season.

2. Darrell Hazell, Purdue

This was supposed to be when it was all coming together for the Boilermakers. One -5 turnover margin and 18-point loss at home to Cincinnati later, and it’s just not happening. There’s time, but the wins have to come.

3. Rich Rodriguez, Arizona

You didn’t see it since you were probably sleeping, but Arizona had to work way, way too hard to get by Grambling. The Wildcats were down at home late in the third quarter, but everything will be okay for now with Hawaii up next. Rodriguez, though, could desperately use a win over Washington the week after.

4. Bob Stoops, Oklahoma

Of course Stoops will never, ever be fired – nor should he be – but there might be a Mark Richt situation happening. No one wants to see him gone, but if OU loses to Ohio State for a 1-2 start, there might be a thought that he’s taken the program as far as it can go.

5. James Franklin, Penn State

The team is looking up more than you think. Franklin was put in an impossible situation, but he’s coaching at a place that can’t let go of the Joe Paterno era – this isn’t exactly a patient or understanding fan base. However, if Penn State loses to Temple for a second year in a row, uh oh.

A big win would be really, really, really nice

Tim DeRuyter, Fresno State; Dave Doeren, NC State; Pat Fitzgerald, Northwestern; Kliff Kingsbury, Texas Tech; Les Miles, LSU; Jim Mora Jr., UCLA
