Boise State vs. Washington State Game Preview

Date: Saturday, September 10th
Game Time: 10:15 pm
Venue: Albertsons Stadium, Boise, ID
Network: ESPN2

Why Boise State Will Win

It’s Game On, Boise State.

Houston is everyone’s Group of 5 darling at the moment, but Boise State has the easier schedule, and – shhhhhh – it might actually have the better team by the end of the season.

The Broncos were outstanding in their opener against the Ragin’ Cajuns of Louisiana-Lafayette, rolling at will on offense while not allowing a touchdown until the fourth quarter. The passing attack was flawless, the ground game good enough, and the secondary – the key this week – only allowed a few decent passes.

Brett Rypien and the Bronco passing game has the weapons and the experience to hang with Wazzu no matter what the pace against a secondary that wasn’t even close against EWU.

Gage Gubrud threw for 474 yards and five scores, and the Cougars allowed close to 500 passing yards overall having a nightmare of a time on third downs and melting down in big moment after big moment. Rypien should throw for over 300 yards without a problem, but he might not have to if the rushing attack works like it’s supposed to.

Why Washington State Will Win

Yeah, Washington State lost. Yeah, the defense didn’t work and wasn’t even close in the clutch. But lost in yet another season-opening loss to an FCS team, the Cougar offense was unstoppable.

Luke Falk was absolutely brilliant, completing 41-of-51 passes for 418 yards and four scores with a pick, hitting Gabe Marks ten times and spreading it out to 11 different receivers. Boise State’s defense still might need a little while to get all the right pieces in place, but until then it’ll have to hope the secondary can hold up enough when Falk goes off.

How did Washington State respond last year after losing to Portland State at home? It came back to beat Rutgers with the offense playing even better. It was a bad loss against Eastern Washington, but it’s also Week One. Mike Leach lost his previous four season-openers, too.

What’s Going To Happen?

Get ready for a fun and wild shootout – to a point. The Boise State defense will slow things down in the second half just enough, and the running game will work well enough, to finally take control.

Falk will be Falk, but the Broncos will generate enough pressure to throw him off as the Broncos pull away and get what’s going to be one of the signature wins everyone will point to throughout the rest of the season.
