Why Boise State Will Win
The Broncos survived the Washington State rally late to get to this point, and now it’s statement time as the last chance to beat a team outside of the Mountain West and BYU. The world is talking about Houston, but this team is good enough to be in the CFP discussion, too.
Does Oregon State have the offense to keep up if the Broncos get rolling early? The Beaver spread attack got everything working against Idaho State after being bottled up by Minnesota, but the Boise State linebackers are active enough and good enough to contain it after getting two weeks to prepare.
The run defense stats don’t really count considering Boise faced Wazzu, but this really is a talented and aggressive front that should be able to stay at home and keep everything contained. The OSU offense hasn’t been impressive so far, and this isn’t the defense to get healthy against.
The Broncos need to get up early and force the Beaver offense to press a bit. It’s not an efficient or dangerous attack, and it’s not built to make big comebacks. Get up 14-0, rely on the running game, and move on – it’s as simple as that.
Why Oregon State Will Win
It might be a small sample size, but the Beaver pass defense has been stellar so far coming up with four picks and not allowing a touchdown pass. When Minnesota had to move the ball in crunch time, it was Mitch Leidner’s legs that got it done, not his arm.
Brett Rypien might be one of the Mountain West’s best quarterbacks, but he also struggled against Washington State when things got tight late. He ended up throwing three picks, lost his third down passing ability, and was just off enough to allow the Cougars to make it fun. If he struggles again, the active OSU secondary should win its share of battles.
With that in mind, how much will the pressure matter? How much will Boise State start feeling like it has to perform and a different level considering this is its moment? Struggle to get a win, and it’ll be a tough playoff argument to make a few months from now even if the Broncos get to 13-0.
But that’s for another day – just getting a win in a Pac-12 stadium against an improved team would be enough. Oregon State has been forgotten about among the rest of the solid Pac-12 teams, but this could quietly grow into a rock-solid team as the season goes on. Beat Boise State, and the expectations change.
What’s Going To Happen?
Boise State will come out roaring. It’s a good enough Oregon State team to keep this close enough to make it a fourth quarter fight, but expect a crisp, efficient effort from the Broncos in the first quarter to provide just enough of a cushion to survive a late Beaver rally.
