Everything worked out fine in the first week under Jim Grobe. It also helped that Baylor continued with its policy to not play a team with a pulse before the Big 12 season.
The offense rolled as usual with plenty of big plays, plenty of nice performances, and great days on the defense in the light scrimmage against Northwestern State. Seth Russell was only 14-of-20, but he threw four scoring passes to go along with the running game that got almost 11 yards per carry from Shock Linwood and two scores from Terence Williams – there was no need to really try.
SMU also came out strong, getting by a sad and rebuilding North Texas with a tremendous day from the ground game in the quick-hitting attack. QB Matt Davis was just okay through the air, but he took off for 91 yards, while Xavier Jones took off for well over ten yards per carry to add some punch.
That was fun, but the Mustang secondary that was lit up for over 300 yards by UNT is about to be too much of an anchor to overcome the offensive positives.
It’s not going to quite be the Baylor you’re used to, but it’ll still score at will. The difference will be an even stronger defense that’ll swarm around the Mustang runners and force way too many third-and-long situations.
