Baylor vs. Rice Game Preview

Date: Friday, September 16th
Game Time: 8:00 pm
Venue: Rice Stadium, Houston, TX
Network: ESPN

Why Baylor Will Win

It’s not the machine it’s been over the last few seasons, but it’s still an offensive juggernaut.

The passing game needs some more work, but the ground attack has been terrific and the defense has more than picked up the slack by shutting down two miserable teams cold.

Rice is a miserable team, too.

The Owls have been awful so far, doing next to nothing offensively in ugly blowout losses to Western Kentucky and Army to kick off the season. But the bigger problem has been a secondary that’s seen two very different passing games, getting ripped up by the Hilltopper air show in Week One, and allowing Army to complete 4-of-6 throws to keep things moving last week.

What’s the cure for the not-quite-right Baylor passing attack? The Rice defense should make everything all better.

Why Rice Will Win

Will Baylor be sluggish again like it was against SMU?

The Bears needed four takeaways to get everything going after a 6-6 halftime score with the Mustangs – the O just didn’t click. The Owls need the same sort of a break, and it needs to not make any big mistakes on their own.

But does Rice do anything right? Is anything working so far to provide any semblance of hope? Not really, but the linebackers are making plenty of tackles and need to somehow keep the Baylor ground game from going off. There might be plenty of young players in key spots, but the linebackers – mainly Emmanuel Ellerbee and Alex Lyons – have been around and know what they’re doing.

Now they needed the rest of the D to come up with something special – and they need Baylor to royally mess up.

What’s Going To Happen?

You know that horrible effort by Baylor to start the SMU game with no pop and no touchdowns? This will be the opposite of that. This is where Seth Russell and the passing game go off and start looking like the Baylor offense is supposed to. Rice won’t have any answers to keep up the pace – there aren’t any playmakers to rely on.
