Baylor (4-0) vs. Iowa State (1-3) Game Preview
Date: Saturday, Oct. 1
Game Time: 12:00 pm
Venue: Jack Trice Stadium, Ames, IA
Why Baylor Will Win
Iowa State simply doesn’t have the firepower to keep up the pace.
The Cyclones finally got things working last week against San Jose State, but there’s still not enough pop to the attack to hang around if Baylor gets hot early on and gets out to any sort of a lead. More than that, the ground game isn’t in place yet to slow things down if the Bear thing starts to work like it’s supposed to.
Seth Russell hasn’t had to press too much yet, but the machine worked just like it’s supposed to against a good team rolling up 387 passing yards with the deep play flying against Oklahoma State. It was like the Bears kept everything relaxed against three miserable opponents, and then it was time to turn it on.
And that includes the defense, too.
The stats have to be taken with a grain of salt considering the opponents before OSU, but Baylor leads the nation in pass efficiency defense – it’s allowed just one touchdown pass so far, even keeping down red-hot Cowboy QB Mason Rudolph.
Why Iowa State Will Win
It might not be the killer it was at times last year, but the running game is starting to rumble again.
It’s been a slow and steady fight, but against San Jose State the O started to look the part again, with star RB Mike Warren finally getting a little room to move and taking advantage of the chance. He was solid against TCU, too, but the offense as a whole didn’t do enough. Against the Spartans, he rolled for 103 yards and a score – last year he got Baylor for 145.
Yeah, Baylor worked against Oklahoma State and started to look the part again, but it struggled to get out of the gate hot against SMU and overall has just 31 points in first quarters. The Cyclones have to get up early, get Warren rumbling, and finally, control the clock.
What’s Going To Happen?
Iowa State will be plucky, and it’ll fight the good fight for about a half, but it won’t have enough offense – and it won’t have enough of a pass rush – to screw up what Baylor wants to do.
How many points have the Bears allowed in the fourth quarter? Zero. The Cyclones need to get them early, and won’t.
