ACC Week 2 Rankings & Quick Takes

How are the ACC predictions so far? SU: 20-4, ATS: 9-7

1. Florida State (2-0)

Final Score: Florida State 52, Charleston Southern 8
Prediction: Florida State 45, Charleston Southern 7
Up Next: at Louisville

Quick Take: It was perfect. Deondre Francois got more live reps in a light and breezy scrimmage. Dalvin Cook did his part with 83 yards and two scores on 11 carries to get in a little bit of work, but all that really matters was a Francois 25-of-32 day to get even more comfortable before having to deal with Louisville next week.

2. Louisville (2-0)

Final Score: Louisville 62, Syracuse 28
Prediction: Louisville 38, Syracuse 30
Up Next: Florida State

Quick Take: Well that was impressive. It wasn’t just that Lamar Jackson had his second straight brilliant game, it’s that everything worked in the fourth quarter to pull away on the road when Syracuse had its chances to come back and make it a game. The offense cranked up 845 yards and did whatever it wanted to. It’s as ready for Florida State as it’ll ever be.

3. Clemson (2-0)

Final Score: Clemson 30, Troy 24
Prediction: Clemson 48, Troy 10, Clemson -35.5
Up Next: South Carolina State

Quick Take: How much does Clemson need a game against South Carolina State? The Tigers were awful on the ground against Troy, sleepy against the Troy passing game that didn’t quit, and was rocky through the air with Deshaun Watson not Deshaun Watson quite yet. From the Ray-Ray McCloud drop-ball-before-goal-line gaffe, the three turnovers, and the mediocre all-around play, it’s a slow start. But it’s also a 2-0 start – don’t panic yet.

4. Pitt (2-0)

Final Score: Pitt 42, Penn State 39
Prediction: Penn State 19, Pitt 17, Penn State -6.5
Up Next: at Oklahoma State

Quick Take: The defense might have melted down against the Penn State passing game late, but overall the offense was outstanding thanks to James Conner and the unstoppable ground game. The Nittany Lions might be banged up, but 341 rushing yards, three scores, and a 6.1-yard average was a sign of big things to come. This looked like a Coastal division favorite – even with the scary fourth quarter.

5. Miami (2-0)

Final Score: Miami 38, Florida Atlantic 10
Prediction: Miami 37, Florida Atlantic 16, Miami -24.5
Up Next: at Appalachian State

Quick Take: The Hurricanes might still be a work in progress, but the defense and the young and thin front seven did a great job against the run, and Mark Walton and Joseph Yearby took care of the offense combining for 276 yards and five touchdowns – four from Walton, and each ran for over 100 yards. It wasn’t a good start with way too many mistakes, but the ground game took over and settled everything down.

6. North Carolina (1-1)

Final Score: North Carolina 48, Illinois 23
Prediction: North Carolina 31, Illinois 20, UNC -8.5
Up Next: James Madison

Quick Take: The Tar Heels might not have come up with an even game, but it kept the scores coming with Mitch Trubisky breaking out after the Georgia game. He threw two touchdown passes and ran for two more, and Elijah Hood added two more scores. How did it all work? The O line was excellent giving Trubisky time. The stars are there for the Tar Heels – they just need room to work.

7. Virginia Tech (1-1)

Final Score: Tennessee 45, Virginia Tech 24
Prediction: Tennessee 31, Virginia Tech 23, Tenn -10.5
Up Next: Boston College

Quick Take: It was a strange game with the historic setting, but Virginia Tech wasn’t up to the spotlight with way, way too many mistakes. The offense was able to move the ball, and it had the early lead with a chance to take control, and didn’t. With eight penalties and five turnovers, and the run defense wearing down as the game went on, the Hokies couldn’t come up with anything positive after Tennessee got into a groove.

8. North Carolina State (1-1)

Final Score: East Carolina 33, NC State 30
Prediction: NC State 30. East Carolina 24, NC State -4.5
Up Next: Old Dominion

Quick Take: The offense works. The changes made to the attack seem to work out just fine, with the running game averaging seven yards a pop and Ryan Finley throwing for 254 yards. But the D couldn’t seem to come up with enough meaningful third down stops and the yards didn’t turn into enough points in the second half. The chances were there to win, but ECU came through, NC State didn’t.

9. Georgia Tech (2-0)

Final Score: Georgia Tech 35, Mercer 10
Prediction: Georgia Tech 38, Mercer 3
Up Next: Vanderbilt

Quick Take: The offense didn’t have to work too hard in a no drama game after the Boston College game. Justin Thomas ran well, hit a few passes to open it up, and got help from everyone around him with the ground game rumbling for 364 yards and dive scores averaging seven yards per pop. It wasn’t a perfect performance by the defense, but it was smooth sailing after giving up an early score.

10. Syracuse (1-1)

Final Score: Louisville 62, Syracuse 28
Prediction: Louisville 38, Syracuse 30, Louisville -15
Up Next: South Florida

Quick Take: There will be better days. The defense wasn’t even close against the phenomenal Louisville offense, but the Orange attack showed hope for the future with Eric Dungey throwing for 255 yards and three scores – he’s a keeper. It’s going to be an evolving team under Dino Babers, but when it kicks in this season, it’s going to be special. And it will kick in.

11. Boston College (1-1)

Final Score: Boston College 26, Massachusetts 7
Prediction: Boston College 27, Massachusetts 9, BC -17
Up Next: at Virginia Tech

Quick Take: Check out an actual BC passing game. Patrick Towles changed up the game with two touchdown passes – and 191 yards overall – to Jeff Smith in the second quarter to kick off a run of 26 unanswered points. The BC D was the BC D – holding UMass to -23 rushing yards – but considering the BC O didn’t have a ground game, Towles showed off why he’s such a difference-maker.

12. Wake Forest (2-0)

Final Score: Wake Forest 24, Duke 14
Prediction: Duke 23, Wake Forest 17, Duke -5
Up Next: Delaware

Quick Take: For the second straight game the defense stepped it up and held its own. The secondary gave up 332 yards, but the run defense was a brick wall allowing just 37 yards and Duke averaging 1.2 yards per carry. Cade Carney overcame a mediocre day from the passing attack with 108 yards and three scores, but helped by three takeaways, this was the day for the D.

13. Duke (1-1)

Final Score: Wake Forest 24, Duke 14
Prediction: Duke 23, Wake Forest 17, Duke -5
Up Next: at Northwestern

Quick Take: The three turnovers and lack of a running game turned out to be a bit problem, but the offense moved the ball. The yards just didn’t translate into points and enough meaningful drives. On the plus side, Daniel Jones was great with 332 passing yards and two rushing scores, but he threw a pick and the rest of the offense didn’t help the cause.

14. Virginia (0-2)

Final Score: Oregon 44, Virginia 26
Prediction: Oregon 47, Virginia 26, Oregon -24.5
Up Next: at Connecticut

Quick Take: Considering the way the Cavaliers played against Richmond to start the season, this wasn’t an awful effort against a high-powered team. The defense couldn’t stop much of anything the Ducks tried to do, but Albert Reid ran for 126 yards and a score, and Kurt Benkert threw for two scores. It’s going to take a lot of time to get to a level to hang with a team like Oregon. It’s going to take baby steps.
