Sept. 3 vs. Howard
How do you kick off a new coaching era and help out a team that needs time and tweaking? You have the Howard Bison on the schedule.
Preseason Prediction: Maryland 55, Howard 7
Sept. 10 at FIU
The Golden Panthers open the season against Indiana at home nine days earlier, and then they crank up part two of their Big Ten season against a Terp team making the trip to Miami. Will Maryland melt in early September? No, but it’ll be a little bit of a fight.
Preseason Prediction: Maryland 31, FIU 16
Sept. 17 at UCF
A week after going to one side of the Sunshine State, the Terps will travel to the center against Scott Frost and his rejuvenated Knights team. This is the game built for Durkin and his defensive coaching staff. UCF will be better than it was last year, but the offense won’t be able to get anything going consistently.
Preseason Prediction: Maryland 28, UCF 13
Oct. 1 vs. Purdue
This is only the second ever meeting between the two schools, with Maryland winning the first time around 24-7 in the 2006 Champs Sports Bowl. There won’t be much of a problem coming up with a win in the Big Ten opener after a tough first half.
Preseason Prediction: Maryland 31, Purdue 21
Oct. 8 at Penn State
4-0 and rolling right along, it’ll all come to a crashing thud against the Nittany Lion defense on the road. Penn State survived in a 31-30 thriller last season, but it won’t be so tight in Happy Valley.
Preseason Prediction: Penn State 34, Maryland 17
Oct. 15 vs. Minnesota
The Golden Gophers will need a win after losing to Iowa the week before, and they’ll get it in just the second meeting between the two schools. Maryland won the 1977 Hall of Fame classic, 17-7, but this year it’ll be Mitch Leidner and the balanced day from the Gopher attack – and five Terp turnovers – that’ll lead to the Minnesota win.
Preseason Prediction: Minnesota 31, Maryland 24
Oct. 22 vs. Michigan State
Maryland won 34-7 over the Spartans – in 1950. Michigan State has claimed the last two meetings over the last two seasons, and the defense will come up big again this year on the road to overcome a great day from the Terps’ defense. It won’t be a thing of beauty.
Preseason Prediction: Michigan State 26, Maryland 14
Oct. 29 at Indiana
It’ll be a fun and exciting fight between two teams in need of a big win, The two teams will go back and forth in a firefight in the second half, but the Maryland defense will pull off the one big stop needed in the final moments to hold on for the key win on the road.
Preseason Prediction: Maryland 36, Indiana 31
Nov. 5 at Michigan
Maryland stunned Michigan, 23-16, two years ago, but last year the Fighting Harbaughs – with then defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin leading the way – pitched a 28-0 shutout. Will the Wolverines be interested after losing to Michigan State the week before? Yeah – they’ll get back on track with a rock of a day from the defense for the second year in a row.
Preseason Prediction: Michigan 34, Maryland 10
Nov. 12 vs. Ohio State
Maryland is 0-2 all-time against the Buckeyes with both losses coming in the last two seasons. The Terp defense gave up 101 points in the two defeats, but this year it’ll be a wee bit better. It won’t be enough to beat Ohio State, just good enough to keep this close into the fourth quarter.
Preseason Prediction: Ohio State 31, Maryland 17
Nov. 19 at Nebraska
It’s the first ever meeting between the two schools with Nebraska rising up in their home finale. Maryland will come up with a good fight, and the offense will have its moments, but the Huskers will play one of their better games over the second half of the season.
Preseason Prediction: Nebraska 30, Maryland 20
Nov. 26 vs. Rutgers
After an uneven season, the Terps will still have a shot at a bowl appearance with a win over Rutgers. Will it be as thrilling as the 46-41 Terp win last year, or the 41-38 Scarlet Knight victory two years ago? Yup. Both teams will pull out all the stops.
Preseason Prediction: Maryland 40, Rutgers 34
2016 Prediction: 6-6
2016 Big Ten Prediction: 3-6
